I just had apples and peanut butter for the first time since kindergarten.
That is a long time to go without something so simple. And the nostalgia it brought up made me pause.
It made me think about how much nuance there is in life. A taste can have a history. Something familiar can mean more to you than you would know how to explain to someone else.
If you saw someone eating apples and peanut butter, you probably wouldn’t give it much thought. You would have no way of knowing whether they ate it yesterday or hadn’t had it since kindergarten. The same snack could be part of a routine or a return to something from years ago.
There is a lot of life inside those little differences.
We give the big moments plenty of attention. The smaller experiences can pass without much acknowledgment, in the middle of everything else. Nobody else may even know that anything happened.
But when something brings up nostalgia, even something as subtle as a familiar snack, I think it deserves a moment. To notice the association. To appreciate that a part of your life can return through something so ordinary.
I want to leave a little more room for that. To pay attention rather than moving straight to whatever comes next. Not every experience needs to become a lesson or lead somewhere. Sometimes it’s enough to notice it and enjoy it.
This time, it was apples and peanut butter.
